Cork Folklore Project
Established in 1996, the Cork Folklore Project is a community-based oral history archive developed through a partnership between Northside Community Enterprises (NCE) and the Department of Folklore and Ethnology at University College Cork (UCC). The project is dedicated to digitally recording the stories, memories and traditions of the people of Cork, creating a unique archive that reflects everyday life, local culture and the rich heritage of the city and county.
Over the years, the project has recorded hundreds of interviews and collected more than 900 hours of oral history, documenting topics including family life, working life, migration, sport, music, industry, local traditions, social change and community experiences. These recordings form an invaluable historical resource for researchers, schools, community groups and anyone interested in Cork's past and present.
What do we do?
More Information:

Preserving Cork's Heritage:
Every interview collected by the Cork Folklore Project contributes to a lasting record of Cork's unique identity. From personal memories and family stories to local customs and community traditions, each recording captures an important part of the county's social and cultural history.
The project also plays an active role in community engagement through exhibitions, publications, outreach programmes, educational initiatives and digital resources such as the Cork Memory Map, helping people connect with Cork's heritage in meaningful and interactive ways.
As part of Northside Community Enterprises, the Cork Folklore Project also provides valuable training and work experience opportunities, allowing participants to develop practical skills in oral history interviewing, research, photography, audio recording, archiving and digital media while contributing to an important community resource.
Whether you're interested in exploring Cork's rich history, listening to recorded memories, contributing your own story or learning more about the project, we'd love to hear from you.
